Abstract
This article wants to show some limitations about the adequately assess the use of force by the police in Mexico. In the beginning, we discuss the conceptual link between the use of force and police accountability. In a second place, we describe the circumstances in which the use of force is more frequent or has an impact on human rights violations. For this, we have based in two sources of data: the survey on prison population conducted by the Economic Research and Teaching Center and complaints filed in the Mexico City Human Rights Commission. Finally, we want to stress the need to develop and implement control mechanisms and generate information that enable a better understanding and prevention of patterns of unnecessary or excessive use of force.
